Our Newcastle allergists provide expert diagnosis and the most effective treatments for a range of allergic conditions.
Anaphylaxis - Paediatric and AdultCharacterised by a severe multi-system allergic reaction, anaphylaxis can occur within half an hour of exposure to the allergy trigger. Symptoms can include respiratory, cardiovascular, neurological, gastrointestinal and dermatological responses including wheezing, chest pain, heart palpitations, dizziness, nausea and more | Food AllergyA food allergy is an immune system reaction to allergy-causing food. There are many foods which cause allergies, however some of the more common food allergies may include wheat, soybeans, peanuts, tree nuts, milk and eggs. |
AsthmaAsthma is a complex condition which may be triggered by an allergic reaction. Dust mites, pollen, pet dander, moulds and other allergens can trigger asthma. Understanding these triggers can provide relief for asthma sufferers and be incorporated into their asthma management plan. | EczemaUnderstanding the link between medical allergies and eczema is key in better managing the condition. An immunologist or allergist is required to determine the probability of an underlying allergy and to provide options for possible treatment. |
Allergic RhinitisAllergic rhinitis, otherwise known as hay fever, is characterized by inflammation in the nose. Symptoms can include sneezing, runny nose and itchy, watery eyes. Determining the allergic triggers that spark hay fever, along with prescribing the right treatment or procedure, is essential in controlling the condition. | ImmunotherapyAllergen specific immunotherapy is a treatment offered for allergic rhinitis sufferers. This can be performed via sublingual (under the tongue) route or injections. This treatment usually goes for a period of 3-5 years. It is also a treatment for insect venom anaphylaxis (bee venom and wasp venom). |

To provide the best treatments for our patients, our allergists and immunologists rely on proven procedures. We conduct a range of procedures at our Edgeworth clinic including skin prick testing, skin patch testing and immunotherapy, otherwise known as desensitisation.
Skin Prick TestingSkin prick testing is an excellent way to test for allergies, as well as find the triggers for asthma and hay fever. Performed by our allergy physician or trained registered nurse, this procedure involves the application of allergens to the skin. The test is fast, safe and pain-free, although there may be some discomfort noted by patients. | Skin Patch TestingPatch testing is used to determine allergic contact dermatitis. This condition occurs when an allergen comes into physical contact with the skin, which results in an allergic reaction. The skin patch test involves allergens being applied to patches, which are then secured to the skin. This in a non-invasive procedure with no needles or prick testing. |
Immunotherapy / Desensitisation Subcutaneous Immunotherapy & Sublingual Immunotherapy TreatmentsTo treat allergic diseases, immunotherapy, or desensitisation, can be used to relieve the allergic reactions caused by the allergy triggers. Subcutaneous immunotherapy modifies the allergic condition by targeting the immunological mechanism via prescribed injections of the allergen extract. Sublingual immunotherapy is the application of an allergen extract, in drop or tablet form, over a specific period of time. These processes are designed to treat allergies by boosting tolerance to the allergy trigger. |
